Coconut Juice

I remember growing up drinking this. It the most common drink back in my country of origin, the Philippines. This is very easy to find anywhere there. I am talking about the fruit itself and therefore the natural juice is very accessible, too.

Who doesn’t know Coconut? this is a very-well known fruit in tropical countries. I am very proud of this certain fruit, actually no, scratch that, the whole coconut tree is a miracle. As every bit and part of the coconut tree has its benefit and use. But in this article I will focus more on the coconut juice or it is what they call coconut water.

According to my research, the coconut juice is very hydrating, When a young coconut fruit is harvested, you can actually enjoy this directly and sip the water from the fruit. Very refreshing and so pure and natural.

Some of the benefits of coconut water is actually low in calories and carbohydrates. I found that this is also high in potassium, free of fats and cholesterol. Being a hydrating drink, it adds to the benefit of healthier skin, as it helps in the hydration.

But then again, as I have always said in my others articles, too much of something won’t ever be good to us. I don’t want to be bias, guys, but I am actually bias hahahah because I love coconut juice. I just feel though that in writing this article, it won’t be complete if I won’t tell the readers the disadvantages too.

This might trigger some allergies, to people who are allergic. So be mindful if you know that you are vulnerable to allergies.

It also has diuretic properties and for some it is laxative, so you might be taking the trip to the toilet more often LOL. This is what my parents warned me about back when I was little, not only the juice but also the fruit itself. That If I eat too much fruit, it might trigger a stomach ache, or if I drink lots of coconut juice, I would pee more often hahaha.

Unlike most other fruits’ juice, this is not a sugary drink but this contains carbohydrates therefore might not be suitable for people with high blood sugar levels. Actually the taste of the juice is also kind of sweet. So you already know to limit your consumption if you know you have high levels of blood sugar.

This juice may lower the blood pressure too much. As we avoid having high blood pressure, it is not at all good to have low blood pressure, too. So be very careful.

And let us not underestimate too much potassium as it is not adviseable to take too much of that as well. It is said to trigger weakness.

Now let’s talk about this canned coconut juice. Obviously, this is not the natural coconut water fresh from the fruit. And since we don’t have coconut here in Italy, I just sometimes miss it and every now and then, I buy this from the Asian grocery store. Mind you, this is not even available at the local italian supermarkets so I have to visit the Asian store to even attain this. This, in particular, is a product from Thailand.

Ingredients of this canned coconut juice:

  • young coconut juice 80%
  • water
  • sugar
  • young coconut pulp
  • acidity regulator: citric acid E330

I appreciate that it has a lot of bits and pieces of the young coconut pulp. And this of course has sugar. Well, I mean the natural juice has carbohydrates so… this anyway, being a canned product, expect this to have sugar added into it.

Let’s talk about taste. What do you think? I like it. I think the reason why they call it water more than juice because it is transparent and almost has that watery taste with a bit of sweetness into it. It is not dense like most other fruit juices. This canned product has that same taste less the freshness, I guess, just my own opinion.

But nonetheless, this is the only coconut juice that I can get, it is better than nothing and of course, if you have it, in your country, I mean, or if it is accessible to you, be thankful and appreciate it. Not everyone can get their fix, you know.

It is safe to say, that this is one of those stuff that I miss from the Philippines. And I do agree that we have a global market now compared to the past but still, some stuff is just not easy to access unless you are in that particular place or region or country. Sometimes I see that they sell the mature coconut fruit at the Asian market, but the young coconut with the fresh juice is not really available at all.

What about you? Do you like coconut juice. Let me know in the comments down below and as always, if you have arrived here until the end, thanks for reading!
