Chestnuts

Le castagne are very widely known here in Italy. Chestnuts is a fruit of the tree castagno. it starts to mature during autumn as the fruit falls from the tree.

Chestnuts are mainly eaten roasted (roasted chestnut), boiled (ballotta) or candied. It is even grated into flour. Italians has chestnuts food items as an ingredient to dishes and sweets like castagnaccio.

According to my research it is a great source of energy. The source of calories is starch and just a tiny percentage of protein. No cholesterol at all. This nutritional property is very similar to cereals and potatoes.
The chestnuts have high level of potassium, phosphorus, sulfur, magnesium, calcium and iron. It also has vitamin B1 and B2.

I am surprised to know that Chestnuts, are also very well known to sports nutrition. So now I know it can be essential to a good diet. In fact this might be a good food for vegans and vegetarians as well.

Before I have arrived here in Rome, I didn’t know how they tasted as this doesn’t exist in my origin country. At first I didn’t like it as it was wierd to me. But now I appreciate it more.
