I want to share a sweet treat perfect for Christmas.
And I won’t deny like the other previous articles that this is not a healthy food item, but then again we are in the middle of festivities. As long as we know our limits, I think that there is nothing wrong about indulging ourselves in food that will make us happy.
These are nougats or as we call it in italian: Torrone
Or Torroncini in this case because I got the mini version with chocolates wrapped around each candy..

The main ingredients are:
- sugar
- honey
- nuts
- peanute
- almonds
- hazelnuts

The most well-known history of Torrone was dated back at 1441 almost at the same time the Christmas tree appeared.
It is said that the sweet was served during the wedding night of Francesco Sforza and Bianca Maria Visconti. Its name and its shape was inspired by Torrazzo, the high tower of Campanile, the city of Cremona.
Other Italian regions has had their own history of Torrone. Even in Benevento dating as far back in III and IV Century a.d. and they have their own in Sicily and Sardinia as well.
No one really knows why it became a part of the Italian Christmas Tradition. Some say because it is also related to the period of harvest of almonds which is important for the recipe of both hard and soft Torrone. It is only at the end of summer by August and September that almonds are harvested then it perfectly coincides for producing Torrone during the Christmas season.
I never realized that Nougat and Torrone are one and the same until I came here in Italy.
And to be honest with you I never did like it before because it was so sweet and the taste wasn’t my bet plus it’s really hard to eat and might destroy my teeth as it’s a hard candy. Also I have never been fond of almonds, honestly. I mean, I eat them but they weren’t my favorite dry fruit back then. But as I discovered it and realized that soft nougats exist too… well I came to like it. Maybe it is the recipe and how it is made. And every now and then I like eating it especially during winter season.
I think that if you come to Italy during the holidays. This might be a great gift to your family and friends. I have talked about almonds in one of my articles, and as much as Torrone has a lot of sugar in it, I just think almonds can also compensate as for a little bit of benefit of this sweet. If you love almonds you might like this as well.
Thank you all so much for reading. And I hope you al have a Merry Christmas with your loved ones! Ciao!
